Kavukcuoglu will oversee Gemini model development, frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams.
Jeff Dean's departure is a different story.
Dean joined Google in 1999 as the company's 30th employee.
Over 27 years, he built the infrastructure that powered Google's rise.
The list includes MapReduce, Bigtable, Google File System, Spanner, TensorFlow, and TPU.
"Almost every piece of core infrastructure that keeps Google running has his name on it," one analysis put it.
Dean's new venture, Discovery Loop, aims to automate the experimental cycle of machine learning, science, and engineering.
The company is registered as a public benefit corporation.

Its seed round was led by Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures.

Jeff Dean and his co-founders trained a generation of AI researchers.

The Google Brain diaspora extends further.
Oriol Vinyals, another Discovery Loop co-founder, was the technical lead on Gemini.
He was also a key figure behind AlphaStar and AlphaCode.
The talent network that Dean, Ghemawat, Vinyals, and Le built at Google has dispersed.
It now spans the global AI industry.
A significant portion of it has landed in China.
